5 stars (good condition and speedy delivery) - item arrived in 2 days and was in perfect condition. completely satisfied. would recommend to others! 2 stars (Way too expensive for a paperback) - Attractive book but not a good value. All the information is available for free on the internet where it is periodically updated and can be referenced for free without wearing out. 5 stars (Astronomy Text Book) - Text book arrived in excellent condition (brand spankin' new) and in a timely manner (about 3 business days). 3 stars (So, so...) - The delivery time was very quick, that was good, and the price was great. The condition of the book was very used and they said it was like new. Other then that I guess it was O.K. 5 stars (Superb textbook - beautifully illustrated, clearly written!) - This is the Eighth Edition of a truly superb textbook for an introductory astronomy course, or for anyone (amateur astronomers?)who is looking for a great and beautifully illustrated general reference source on astronomy. I've been teaching intro astronomy for many years and keep my eye on all the textbooks. Aimed primarily at non-science majors, Seeds' book is a hum-dinger and really the best I see out there at this time. The author has a very clear and quite intertaining writing style, and each edition of the book is even more beautifully illustrated than the last. The artwork especially in the last two editions is simply super, and clearly illustrate many phenomena that students often have trouble with. This textbook covers every topic needed in a survey course from the nature of light, a bit of astronomy history and telescopes, properties and formation of stars and galaxies, the planets, and very current data on cosmology, dark matter, life in the universe and so on. Very up to date! Mike Seeds' book goes fairly easy on the math (although all important concepts are covered)compared to some other "intro astronomy" books. Overall, I find this book ideally suited to a survey course for non-science majors. For science majors or a textbook that might also be useful in somewhat higher level astronomy courses, I would recommend Kaufmann/Freeman's "Universe" as an excellent choice. Seeds' book is comprehensive and about 500 pages in length - similar to almost all intro astronomy textbooks. To a great extent, literally all these 500 page textbooks are way too lengthy for a one semester survey course. It is difficult to get students to read this much for each class. I keep hoping that Mike Seeds, a... 1 stars (Who is the audience for this book?) - This is the first review I have been moved to write ... I bought this book because I like to read other people's perspectives on Physics; particularly when they are as smart as Roger Penrose undoutedly is. I have a PhD in theoretical physics (QFT) so I am hardly uneducated, or uninterested, in these topics. I found that this book tried to jump straight to an elegant mathermatical explanation without trying to impart any of the physical understanding. If you don't already know this material, this book won't help. At several points I just laughed out loud; one in particular when after explaining some arcane point in complex algebra involving a fraction, Penrose adds a comment along the lines of "I explained what a fraction was at the start of the book". He seems to be under the total delusion that you can just present the results of 20yrs of education in as many pages and people will just pick it up. I can only conclude that he is so familiar with this material that he has completely lost touch with its difficulty. The same must be said for those reviewers who liked this book; or else they are just lying to make themselves feel good; or perhaps they don't understand as much as they think they do! 5 stars (Shining brilliance!) - Penrose's book is really a thrilling experience. His intuition is brilliant. His explanations are crisp. His teaching ability can be probably only matched by Feynman. I got the book yesterday, but couldn't stop reading it so far. The first 150 pages I've read gave me a completely new perspective on complex calculus, which I had studied in undergraduate and thought I understood it. I am looking forward to other sections on differential geometry and other advanced topics. The book is very appropriate for people who have taken/are taking math courses but don't have good intuitive feel for the subjects covered---most math courses (especially, the grad ones) only emphasize the mathematics not the in... 5 stars (an awesome intro to atheism) - I was in need of something new to read, especially on atheism, and after I read the reviews for "Atheist Universe," I bougut it. I'm interested in religous questions, so I read a ton of religous books. I also read books on atheism because something inside me is suspicous of religion. So I often enjoy books by clear thinking atheists like David Mills. Now the book. This book is slender (about 240 pages), is neatly organized, and is clearly written (this is the most lucid book on atheism I've read, and Mills has some serious writing talent). All the essentials are here: arguements for the existence of God, as well as their flaws; how morality doesn't need religion to support it; and big bang cosmology (how the universe doesn't need a creator). This last part was helpful, since I'm always in need of a primer on the scientific jargon--something that is often technical and confusing--but which this book dealt with simply and clearly. There are a lot of books on atheism out there, but if one must choose the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the subject, then get this book. You can look at it as the "Cliff's Notes" to atheism, although it's so jam-packed that it could be an encyclopedia. I don't keep many books on my shelf; most go back to the used bookstore. This one, however, is a keeper. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie." 3 stars (Premise to refute all notions of God is absurd) - The premise that Dogmatic Religions are the only religions that define God is absurd and therefore his claim to refute the existence of God is equally absurd. There are several non-Dogmatic religions that work towards the understanding of God and Reason through scientific reasoning on one pillar and archetypal symbolism in the mind's most abstract to bridge a gap to understanding that God resides Within. The oddity most people debate on the existence of God is not whether GOD is infinitely manifested, on all cosmic planes, but whether... 5 stars (The Best) - From my experience I would sincerely say that this is not only the best book ever written about "A Course in Miracles" but one of the best spiritual books EVER written. This is because it does the seemingly impossible. It makes the heretofore arcane "A Course in Miracles" completely understandable to both the novice and the experienced student by bringing it into the vernacular. What was confusing before is now crystal clear. Writers have been trying to do that for 30 years, but this book is the first to really succeed. Second, it is of great value to those who aren't interested in A Course in Miracles by setting the record straight about Jesus, who never intended to start a religion, and making universal spiritual truths more clear for everyone. The Disappearance of the Universe talks the way that people really talk, and in doing so brings everyone a message that can't be missed - if you're ready for it. 1 stars (Should be called the "Book of Lies and Deceptions") - Arten pg. 55: "What if you don't try to convince people to believe anything? Start writing it like it's just a story - as though you made it up. Then tell people they made you up. It's all made up. That's the point, my brother." Got through 100 pages before I decided not to waste any more of my time. This book is full of contradictions, the writing is crude, the authors attitude towards heavenly messengers is ridiculous. How many people on earth if they TRULY had heavenly messengers pop out of thin air would talk to them as crudely as Gary does. Gary's belief that he's witty and humorous is the illusion. After 100 pages I was still waiting to find something NEW and enlightening. There is nothing new or enlightening here. 5 stars (Wonderful Book of Ideas) - When reading this book, I suspended judgment whether it was a "true" book, or pure fiction. I also did not care where the ideas came from. Perhaps they were channeled. Perhaps not. Perhaps all great work is channeled. In t... 5 stars (A Wonderful Convergence) - There are many wonders to be explored in the parallels between Buddhism and scientific inquiry into the nature of reality, life and consciousness. As you read this book, your thoughts ride a rocket of insight into the contentious and often disappointing debate between scientific theory and spirituality that seems to be paralyzing our society today. And yet the text never flaunts a particular conceit or takes on the aggressive, often brutal nature of the debate. While the parallels explored are startling and inspiring, most wonderful of all is the critical mind, engaging personality and boundless curiousity of the Dalai Lama himself, as these qualities radiate from the text. Reflecting on his theme, the Dalai Lama illuminates at least a view if not a way through the contention and confusion. He writes: "There is more to human existence and to reality itself than current science can ever give us access to.... By the same token, spirituality must be tempered by the insights and discoveries of science. If as spiritual practitioners we ignore the discoveries of science, our practice is also impoverished, as this mind-set can lead to fundamentalism." It is truly revealing that a man at the heart of a very traditional spiritual philosophy and practice can shed the burden of dogmatic thought for an open dialogue and the exciting and affirming human capacity to seek truth. Between science and spirituality, between the knowable and the unknowable, the critical thinking and spiritual insight of the Dalai Lama inspires the belief that open minds and open dialogue are not beyond either our scientific thought or our spiritual belief. This book is one of the most spiritual testaments while coincidentally being a highly accessible exploration of great scientific advances and current research. It is a book I will return to again and again. 5 stars (Science is not contra Religion and vice versa) - It is so nice to see religious leaders ... 5 stars (Direct. Easy to follow. I wish I'd thought of writing this book.) - I bought this title on a whim after reading a few mixed reviews. I can say that the information in this book is valid and direct. There is little fluff. As well, anyone leaving a poor review has obviously either not read the book or is intentionaly trying to sabotage its sales for their own benefit. An absolute must for any new car salesman. 2 stars (Unimpressive) - I ordered this book after reading several good reviews about it. After reading it, though, I was unimpressed to say the least. I guess I'm not gullible enough to believe the BS and hokey stories that seem to have been exaggerated, embellished, or made up all together. Overall it was a big disappointment. 2 stars (Mediocre) - I am new to sales, selling cars for only 7 months. This book has little new or significant material. 4 stars (Not bad, not bad at all) - Okay So this isn't Halo, but it isn't half bad, I bought it on an impulse, I was really going for a sports game, but it turned to be a good desicion, Sulu can be annoying but all in all the action isn't bad, and for people who actually like Star Trek it is fun. I like the Wraith fighters, and the unpredictable objectives. All in all it ain't bad. Thx 4 stars (The true voice) - I found that this game was very enjoyable. It was original in the world of star trek. The controlls could have been better but were acceptable. It also could have benifited from a co-op mode, but overall it was a great game. 1 stars (Whoa what a mark on Star Trek gaming) - Im not really sure what this drivel is. This has to be the worst concept for a game I have ever seen. There is no way, a fan of Star Trek developed this game. Had to be some goofball who enjoys pitiful flight simulators. 5 stars (A very comprehensive publication) - This book covers SAP's transaction system and its Business Warehouse data warehouse. The SAP part, Part A, covers 32% of the book (pages 1-134). Part B, which is 68% of the book, covers BW from pages 135 through 419. While it includes a wealth of general information about both the transaction and data warehouse systems, it also contains technical information that provides very good information. In Chapter B12 (72 pages from pg 250-322), Creating and Loading InfoCubes, the step-by-step procedure is shown via screenshots. Chapter 14 (31 pages), Creating Queries with BEx, shows the step-by-step procedure for creating a query. These two chapters, covering 103 pages, alone constitute 24.5% of the whole book (and 36% of the BW part of the book). The book also covers the planning and design, which is something I found very useful. Ideally, the book should be divided into two books. However, for those who desire to get an overall picture of the environment (after all BW typically is installed in the SAP environment), this is a great book, very easy to follow and understand even for novices, though somewhat expensive. I would not suggest this book to someone, though, who might think that this book will enable one to develop into a BW developer, for which more extensive training is required. 2 stars (Basic BW Book) - This book gives some information about BW. 80% of the content is about background and peripheral information. What is ERP? How project team should be formulated, etc. 20% information is about BW. This information is very basic. It is not complete. You may want to buy electronic version. Information may be worth $6. But I would not recommend buying the "paper" book. Very ordinary book with elementary content. 5 stars (Best BW treatise available on the market today) - I jumped ahead to read Part 2 on the BW, since I am the lead for a BW implementation and that section is of utmost interest to me. 3 stars (Yeah, the graphics are nice but its not that fun....) - Unless you cheat like a Cacodemon, otherwise you get killed quick. This expansion pack takes the award for the Fastest Killing of a Player, less than 3 minutes. The only game that is as bad is the first Aliens Vs. Predator game. I bought this dark game at the discount bin of my local game store, thinking that it would be more interesting (or fun) than the original game (which I played all the way to the end, cheat-cheat-cheat). I was expecting something like a more intense version of Serious Sam but it plays alot like Resident Evil. In contrast, Half-Life 2 was alot more fun to play - despite its Police-State registration process. Doom 3 needs to be more fun and less Funhouse. 5 stars (Better than the original) - This game is 10x better than the game it came with. Get this game and you will experience doom! The level designs are more interesting and frightening. The action is faster and makes you think quick. Much Much better than regular doom3. 4 stars (A Step Up for DOOM 3) - Better overall. Smooth install. Better weapons. The Artifact is fun to use. Faster and more variable levels. Just when it starts to get too tedious (and it does), some element of the game significantly changes and it's more fun again. Only a few problems to solve during the game. There was nothing particularly amusing about this game, no real levity, and I never really felt like my monster fighting skills were improving from level to level. Neat graphics though, claustrophobic environment, better blasting satisfaction, but for me...no real immersion.
