5 stars (Great for what it is) - Each language software package can only handle a few angles on language. Talk Now! offers inspired games and oral repetitions for learning vocabulary, telling time and more. The bad reviews must be generated by users who expect everything from one cd. Not me. I love Talk Now! for what it is and hope they expand their scope with all languages as they have with Cantonese. If you want to become fluent, buy several software packages and visit the country for more than a year. If you want an almost effortless and fun introduction this is it. It's one of a kind. 2 stars (Not the best product I've tried) - If you just want to learn a few words in Cantonese and learn well by plain rote, this is probably a fair course. However, if you're serious about learning Cantonese, skip this one and try something else. This course just throws out random words with no context of how they'll be used. Grammer and enunciation are given very little attention here. If you've studied Cantonese at all, you'll understand the importance of both. The audio is not terrible clear and the pronounciation doesn't seem to jive with what I'm learning from my wife and other courses. This course is okay for the price (I got it on sale bundled with the Mandarin course for $10), but if you plan on ever having a conversation in Cantonese someday, I'd recommend the excellent Pimsleur course. Basic Cantonese by Virginia Yip is quite good as well. Yeah, you put out 20 bucks to begin with, but you can make ringtones exactly how YOU want them and save money overall ($2.50 a pop from Cingular usually). Also, no big deal if you need to temporarily delete tones from your phone (like Christmas tunes). Just resend rather than paying another $2.50 to phone company. Only thing that would have made this slightly better would be if you could send tones by USB cable to save on data usage during send. It does not teach grammar, per se, but my kids pick it up. They need no help from me to do their lessons, and are learning good pronunciation. You don't even have to try to start learning. Lessons fly by and once I've learned a word, I think about it automatically, instead of trying to make associations with how the word sounds or something. (Example: instead of thinking "Rice... think of an arrow going into a bowl of rice... oh, yeah, Arroz" - I just see rice and think arroz. I'm not translating from English to Spanish, I'm thinking in Spanish. When I had to take Spanish classes (required for classroom credit) I found that not only did the little I had done in Rosetta Stone helped me excel, but that my pronunciation was unbeatable because I had been constantly using the Rosetta Stone program. While other students struggled to put together sentences, I said sentences almost as quickly as if I were speaking in English, because this program does that - It Helps You THINK in Spanish! This is not because I am any smarter than anyone else; historically in classes I have been an unremarkable student. I personally didn't use the voice recognition part as much, but it also helped. 2 stars (It may be effective for some, but it is not the program for me) - Rosetta Stone was the first Spanish language program that I had tried. (I have previously studied French, Latin, and ancient Greek.) I ordered it from the company directly but returned it after about a month. It has some interesting unique features but it was not for me. Here are the positives: 1. The pictures are colorful and memorable and will help you learn many words quickly. 2. There is an interesting effective feature which allows you to listen to a word or phrase in Spanish, record your voice, and playback. Then a scale tells you how close your voice came to that of a native speaker. But I would not spend extensive time repeating the same word or phrase because it is very difficult to meet their standard for "native speaker." These are the negatives: 1. There is a great emphasis on sentences that are not practical for an adult tourist, business person, or employee wanting to speak Spanish with native speakers. In addition, most of the sentences have verbs in the present progressive tense; there is not enough practice in all the Spanish verb tenses. There are many sentences in Spanish about boys under the table, girls walking, women waving, and men falling. 2. Because I work at a computer all day at work, I am not motiviated to sit at a computer for long during my spare time. Because I am eager to learn useful Spanish quickly, Pimsleur is more effective for me. I can listen to the CDs in my car or at home. In addition, I have learned more sentences that I may want to use such as how to find a bathroom, restaurant, or pharmacy; or how to order food. This program gives a good foundation for spoken and written Swedish - when accompanied by daily practice (newspapers, radio, books, etc...) and exposure to the spoken language. PROS: The Rosetta Stone method is painfully simple. The speaker reads a phrase and you click on a matching picture. There is a lot of repitition which makes it easy to retain the information you learn. There is quite a lot of vocabulary introduced, but not so quickly that it gets frustrating. CONS: The cost of this program is outrageous. I could take private Swedish Courses with a professional Swedish language instructor for this price. 4 stars (Very good for a Star Wars game) - I've got to state up front that I suffer from major Star Wars burnout -- the first movie (1977) was great, everything else has been merchandising -- so my praise for this game is not given lightly. Gameplay is smooth and dynamic, some Star Wars games we've had in the past have been really dreadfully behind the times, this feels like it's state-of-the-art. The space combat is a welcome addition. My son clued me in on new characters previously not available to be played. It looks great on the screen. Overall? For a Star Wars game, very good. For any other game, ok. It's an improvement on previous Star Wars games, but for my money I just do not want to hear Obi Wan Kenobi's voice encouraging me to trust the force or take a droidica apart or anything like that. I'm just sick of Star Wars in general. Now, my son, who's eleven, thinks this is the best game he's played since Halo 2. 2 stars (Splendid graphics, but...) - Ok, I'll start with the graphics. I have high end PC (AMD 64-bit 3500+, Radeon X800XT 256mb, S-ATA Western Digital, 2 GB RAM) and there were no troubles with running the game at highest settings. The game is really beautiful - there are flying birds, crocodiles, the terrain is funny when you zoom on it. But for me this is the only good thing in the game. For example, why the **** you need that animated traveling steam engine? It does not change anything in the game. Only increases the lag in the game... You have many nations to choose from, but the final result is the same upgrades, almost the same units. I and one mate of me played the game over the LAN. He was with the Russians, me with the English guys. Practically, the only difference was that the Russians speak in Russian... I don't think that having the home town is big advantage. About the maps - I did not find random generated maps, which for me is big issue. I want to play every time on different maps. This gives me much more fun than to play on a map that I already know. And finally, when I wanted to uninstall the game it took me a lot of time just waiting to initialize uninstalling process. The whole process took about 3 minutes! In general the game lost the feeling of its predecessors. I don't feel it like AoE II. BTW, the same is with the EA II. For me much better are AoE II and the first EA. So, I'm going to sell my copy of AoE III and keep playing Empires Dawn of the Modern World. 4 stars (Not bad at all!) - I was a little antsy about picking up this title. A lot of the reviews are extremely mixed and offered up a wide variety of pros and cons for this game. I became a hard boiled fan of AOE1 way back when it first came out and you'd often find me facing off with friends via LAN while my Phonecian war elephants ran amok through their ranks. AOE2 was even better, allowing better tactics for your infantry and cavalry as well as great seige equipment and castles. So ...
