There are many tools on the market today that allow you to securely encrypt your files. They all have the same downside, though. They require an extra operation to be performed when you encrypt or decrypt your file. Here are the two common scenarios: You edit a document and save it to a file. Then you encrypt this file with your encryption program. And vise versa. You decrypt a file and then view/edit it in your text processor... 4 stars (God's Presence in All Things) - Brother Lawrence's life, as revealed in this book, is a testimony to the place that God should occupy in the daily life of all committed Christians. His humility forced him to be dependent on God for all things, and this book illustrates his philosophy in action. Brother Lawrence tells the reader how he can be grateful for all things - both good and bad - in one's life. I recommend it to all Christians who seek to prioritze their life to place God at the forefront. 4 stars (Devotional Classic) - The Practice of the Presence of God is an incredible story of a man who sought to be ever in God's presence. The lesson of Brother Lawrence is simple: If you want to be ever in the presence of God, you have to practice, practice, practice! You must force yourself to be ever aware of God's working around you. You must turn every aspect of your life into a service to Him. When you have done so, you will be habitually in the presence of God. No silly gimmicks. Just a continuous state of prayer, thanking God for every blessing and turning over every care. While at times this little book finds ways to repeat itself, hidden in the basic story is truth upon truth. This little book makes for very good daily spiritual reading. It is broken up into small, easily manageable sections which can be read as part of a daily devotional or prayer time. The only difficulty with it is that it's very short, so it probably won't last you that long if you only read through it once. But, it is still a devotional classic worth reading. 5 stars (constant and unceasing prayer) - Over the years I've met a few "prayer warriors" who seemed to spend every waking moment connected to God. They carried a peace about them, and saw prayer as a gift rather than an obligation. Frankly, they made me feel terribly inadequate. I wanted to have that type of relationship with God, but wasn't quite sure where to start. I had trouble setting aside fifteen mi... 5 stars (A must read for any Woman in a "man's" world) - This book is beyond helpful, and is presented in a manner that allows the reader to not only evaluate herself, but to immediately put into action solutions to potential problems. Each chapter is broken down into subjects that can affect a woman's progress up the ladder, with a mistake listed on one page and solutions to apply to the workplace on the next. This is a no-nonsense book that is written by a woman for women, so "quit bein' a girl" and buy this book! The insight and results are more than impressive - they're life changing. 2 stars (Thinly Veiled Misogyny) - With all due respect to Dr. Frankel, I am a 37yr old professional who has been turned down many times for jobs well qualified for and promotions earned because I didn't either kiss the right butt, stab backs or play corporate cut-throat. And I'd hoped this book would help me figure out some way to either fix the problem or discover the root cause. And unfortunately, I walked away from this book feeling allot worse than before. So a warning before reading into it too far. Although Dr. Frankel coaches female professionals to become more successful in the workforce, this book has placing 101 `mistakes' strictly on our heads as a kind of `punishment' for being feminine. Meaning, she claims that we shouldn't act like men, but act less like young girls and more like women. All these mistakes being gleaned from childhood, everything you were taught was wrong and everything boys were taught was right. More than half these mistakes poignantly made several references toward (after working with thousands of women) finding more often than not, `men don't do this, but women do.' As the list went on, I got the distinct impression that there's absolutely no way I could possibly fit into this mould and considering her statement of the mistake of `quit aiming for perfection' then leaving the paradox of being perfect and imperfect at the same time. 5 stars (The Most Important Thing In Life) - We speak our lives into existence. The most important subject I have ever studies -- the most important class I've ever taken -- has been a class on Conversation. We have 3 conversations which determine our lives, and the impact we have on those conversations determines our success or failure, our happiness or tragedy: The conversation we have with ourself. The conversation we have with another person or people. And the conversation that occurs after we leave the room. Do whatever you can do to impact and improve the results of those conversations. If this issue is a challenge for you, by all means, get this book. Study and perfect your conversations -- it will change your entire life. 5 stars (The Pool of Shared Meaning) - Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High, by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan and Al Switzler, Forward by Stephen R. Covey, McGraw-Hill 2002, 240 pages, AU$27.95 (Dymoks) The authors define Crucial Conversation as a discussion between two or more people where (1) stakes are high, (2) opinions vary, and (3) emotions run strong. Crucial Conversations are frequently spontaneous; more often than not they come out of no where. To find that you enter a Crucial Conversation watch for signs that people don???#t feel safe (silence or violence) and your own style under stress. (...) The authors address three aspects of Crucial Conversation - managing our style under stress, dialogues technics and, briefly, techniques we may use to arrive at a decision once the pool is filled with shared meaning. On Style Under Stress At the foundation of the book lays the EQ theory, popularised by Daniel Goleman in his 1995 book . The EQ theory articulates the evolutionary survival value of the amygdala, a part of the brain that overrides the problem-solving part of the brain in fight-or-flee situations. As had been predicted by the EQ theory, the authors have observed in numerous occa... 1 stars (Lacking Respect for Others) - In forty brief chapters Santorum speaks about conservatism, marriage and the American family through the lense of his Catholic faith. He describes Americans as "stewards" whose "task is to secure and increase this patrimony [our inheritance] for our children". What is this patrimony? It is social, economic, moral, cultural, and intellectual "capital". Santorum believes that the family "is at the center of all the types of capital". But his is a rigid and exclusive definition of family - there can only be one mother and one father. Nor is it the family found in the Bible since those often included multiple wives and concubines. It is subtitled, "Conservatism and the common good". The difference between liberals and conservatives is their concept of freedom. Santorum says liberals, or, as he derogatively calls them, "village elders", want "the freedom to be and to do whatever [they] want - freedom to choose, irrespective of the choice, freedom without limits (with the obligatory caveat that you can't hurt anyone else directly)." Opposed to this is the conservative view of freedom. "Properly defined, liberty is freedom coupled with responsibility to something bigger or higher than the self. It is the pursuit of our dreams with an eye toward the common good." The question is who gets to define what is meant by the common good? My guess would be conservatives. Further, "the foundational social unit that instills a devotion to such liberty and that stands against [often sexual] No-Fault Freedom's toxic effects is the traditional family." "Village elders" view human nature differently than conservatives. Santorum believes "conservatives follow the traditional Judeo-Christian worldview, which includes the concept of original sin .... A view of human beings as fallen creatures given to sinfulness." And later, "the truth is that human beings are not born naturally inclined to do the right thing." Is he still livin... 4 stars (Fun. But, aim for the 12 and under crowd.) - I am a grown man. I have always enjoyed the first Willy Wonka movie. I have yet to see the new movie. But, if it's anything like this game, it's not all that different. A very similar plotline gives us older folks (35) a chance to sort of exist inside the story we grew up with. But, the gameplay experience is much too simplistic for an adult. Shame. The movie's always kind of been for the adults really. I decided to play it with my son. Now, there was an enjoyable experience. Extremely colorful, and chocked full of mini games. The Factory is alive with things to see and do. A large assortment of logical puzzles as well as quick mouse button mashing games. Quite long as well. 2 CD roms that take up a surprising 1.1 gig. That's a bit for games aimed at the younger crowd. It is entertaining. But, Johnny Depp is not doing the voiceover for Willy Wonka. You'll be surprised to hear that it is James Taylor. For us old fogies, he's an incredible singer from thousands of years ago ;-). You really can't go wrong with this, though. It's very magical. ... 2 stars (Non-Die Hards Need Not Apply) - There's only one kind of person I'd recommend this game for; someone who loves loves loves 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' -owns the soundtrack and has a pair of TV room goggles love- and who also really likes platform jumpers. And even if you are this person the 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' game will wear thin on you more than once... per level. The general goal within the levels is mind numbingly simple; dodge enemies and obstacles to get to the exit. Your enemies are mostly Wonka's candy making robots -sweepers, wrappers, sudsy cleaners, stompers, and an irate little bot that has a penchant for throwing candy- unfortunately all you can do is dodge these guys, there's no taking them out. There's a sort of cathartic pleasure is being able rid yourself of a grunt in a game and the 'Charlie' game is so tedious it's going to take more than a few cathartic kills in another game to get the red out of your eyes. Passing levels in 'Charlie' isn't hard in the least but it is, like I said, tedious. To unlock an exit often sends you running around the factory cleaning Oompa Loompas, catapulting them around the room, getting them to open doors and break walls for you, pull switches, and trigger weight buttons and if any of this sounds like fun, trust me, it isn't. The novelty, which is really the only thing this game has going for it, wears thin very quickly leaving you leading Oompa Loompas around searching for that one switch to get to the next stage of the game desperately wishing you could pause the game and shove a first person shooter in. Several times when I was trying to get through a particularly grueling level I remember thinking 'this is not fun, I am not having fun here'. Aside from the novelty the game has one redeeming feature; mini games. There are five mini games and two or three of them are really a lot of fun. My favorites are 'Lift a Loompa' in which you rescue Oompa Loompas from the chocolate river ... 4 stars (Great Information but Needing a 2nd Edition) - The edition of the book that I have was published in 1999. It was a very helpful book to guide me in my selection of my first sailboat. The general principles that John Vigor advocates will be valid indefinately. I found his "In Comparison" ratings and his "Known Weaknesses" sections valuable. His ratings of comparative seaworthiness, speed, and comfort help anyone selecting a small cruising sailboat. John has made a great contribution with this book. That being said, it would be nice to get a new edition. In particular, it would be valuable to get John's views on other potential bluewater sailboats easily cruised and handled by two people. What are his views on other boats in 28' to 32' size? I suggest the 1999 upper price limit of $50K should be increased. How about a limit of $100K? John's opinions on selected other potential boats from Beneteau, C&C, Catalina, Ericson, Island Packet, and Tartan would make it worth while to buy a new edition. 3 stars (Screen the Reviewers, Please......) - I've read Vigor's book, I've bought an Albin Vega within the past 3 weeks, I'm no circumnavigator (and never will be), but now have my boat of choice for the duration. I at least know if I do want to go offshore, my boat, properly prepared, can do it. The rater that speaks of Vigor's head being 'up his stern' should lighten up or, at least, give some reasoning for his unsubstantiated comments. Obviously, if your heading offshore you probably won't just read Vigor's book (or choose a Cal 20 or Catalina 27) but the book sure narrows the choices to make. And, of course, Vigor's choices aren't the only ones. As many raters said, 'a good starting point' and, contrary to captain 'up his stern' and his innuendo's, there's not a boat in Vigor's 20 choices that are inherently 'bad'. Sorry to Capt. A.
