4 stars (Trades readability for depth and rigor) - This text is best suited for very good students who are motivated, comfortable reading English at a high level and mathematically adept: other students would be served much better by a different book. It contains far more material than could possibly be covered in a standard freshman general chemistry sequence, even with a good class. The authors assume that their audience is composed of the students I described initially (I am told it is the textbook at MIT), and leave it to the instructor to "break it down" for the students. Initially, I was not fond of this book, but I have slowly changed my mind, and I believe I have a better grasp of introductory chemistry thanks to the extra depth it goes to and the challenges it made me rise to. 2 stars (Could be much better) - It is because of textbooks such as this one that students lose interest in chemistry, and, worse, science in general. Yes, it is filled with LOTS of information, but there are many instances in which otherwise relatively simple concepts are twisted into something incomprehensible. In some cases, it seemed that the authors went out of their way to explain a topic in the most convoluted manner possible. Come on guys, chemistry is complex enough as it is, so rather than write a tome displaying how much YOU know about the topic, how about a more "student friendly" textbook that doesn't so readily confirm most people's suspicians that chemistry is as dry as saw dust. 5 stars (Excellent Intro Text) - This text was used in 1999-2000 at Oregon State University for the 100-level General Chem sequence for non-science majors. It is an excellent text with a (generally) friendly approach to introductory topics, and there are many nice photographs and discussion boxes containing info about practical chem applications. 1 stars (University Lvl Bio Student's Opinion) - This is the worst bio book I have read. I've had at least 3 different biology courses with their respective books, but this one was so bad I felt obligated to warn others. I don't bother with these reviews but in this case the book "earned" it. The pros: I am at length impressed at Freeman's attempt to draw an inquisitive experimental nature into a bio book. He talks about many interesting scientific experiments and really introduces you to the scientific method. His diagrams while usually not as detailed as other biology books are sufficient. The cons: What Dr. Freeman attempts in his book forces him to leave out a lot of basic bio. A multitude of biology terms are just missing, as if they never existed. What's worse is that this terminology is actually required on bio tests. I had to refer extensively to my professor's notes and look up the missing terms through the web to make the grade. Unfortunately Dr. Freeman is not a very clear writer either, at least in this volume. He talks about many important topics but with his writing style, I have actually mentally missed many important points. He just doesn't emphasize what you need to know in basic biology. There are many decent biology books that have the organization you need to sort through the unimportant and the important material but Freeman's somewhat conversational style muddles his book. Furthermore, many of his multiple choice practice problems in the text have incorrect solutions in the back of the book. In fact for some odd reason the solutions in the back of the book cover all the volumes. I felt he should have instead devoted the answers to the correct solution and the reasoning behind the solution instead of putting up these additional answers to volumes I don't have and don't intend to purchase. I bought this book because it's titled "Manager's Guide to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act," but it's not about the Sarbanes-Oxley Act: this book is about the author's "Control Smart" approach to internal controls. And although it is well written, and it appears that the correct implementation of "Control Smart" could assist a company in achieving SOX compliance, it's a burger when I ordered a ham sandwich. Below are some questions that I believe a book with such a title should answer--this book answered none of these questions: - Who is Sarbanes? Who is Oxley? - How was the legislation developed? - Describe the legislation e.g. is it 200 pages of dense type,or is it something that could be included an appendix? - What changes, specifically, are required by the law? - What's the history of internal control study and analysis? - Would the SOX legislation have prevented any corporate scandals; or rather, will this legislation be effective, and if so how? - If there are contentions about the legislation (there are), what are some of the issues? Scott Green wrote an OK book, I thought the case studies were excellent, about an approach to managing a company's internal controls. Someone then took this text and put it in a misleading wrapper that promised content about different, albeit related, material. 1 stars (Far too general to be of value) - Read this one a year ago and found it to be very non specific in the elements necessary to gain compliance. Now after three SOX engagements and having to deal with the intricacies of 404, this book stands as a poor introduction to the enormity of the task to follow. 5 stars (Almost Perfect) - This book is one of the best books I found. If your not sure which book to buy, check the library for your title and go through it there. Step by step with check lists and tips. Explainations on just about everything. One problem I had to figure out myself was the plenum system. The author goes over it briefly but found no extra benifit. More research has led me to believe that the plenum could be used as an undergravel filter for serveral months. Upon setup and first water tests you could start to stock your tank without the worries of the tank going through cycles. Best book on Marine tank set up I've found...hands down. 3 stars (Not good enough) - Although very easy to read and understand, the book is very basic in every aspect. It has some nice pictures, and the fish description section is very good. This book doesn't talk about calcium aditions to the home reef, which is an escencial aspect of reef keeping. Also it gives little information on lighting, and the different kinds of lights. Lighting is also escencial and it surprises me how the book doesn't have much information about it. Also it talks about some types of filters that can be use, which are really not important or good for the reef aquarium. I would suggest more complete readings by J.Sprung 5 stars (Best book ever to get started) - This is the best single book in my library for those getting started in the hobby. I was lucky enough to buy this before setting up my own. The book is clear and concise with nice diagrams and pictures.
