1 stars (I'm not an idiot, thankyouverymuch. ) - I was just assigned this book for my psychology class and managed to read/skim through it. Maybe I'm just angry because I had the opportunity to take a college-level class in cognitive theory over the summer and was thus exposed to much more interesting reading material, but this book is a real piece of work... even compared to most high school textbooks I've had. For starters, the pictures are much larger than the words. As much as a good illustration can help one grasp a difficult concept, the ones in this book show pretty much NOTHING. Then, there's the whole tone of the material, which really aggrivates me. It seems very condescending, with words like "placebo" that almost any high school senior would know phoneticized (pluh-SEE-boh). In additoin, it appears as though more effort has been placed towards catering to special lobby groups than towards creating a memorable book that will sucessfully teach psychology and impart a love for the field. "Race relations" are referred to a lot, as are "animal rights." As liberal as I am (anti-war, quasi-socialist, for legal recognition of gay unions, pro-environmentalist to a certain degree), I really get irked when these petty, almost-nonissues that (stupidly) took up much of the Left's focus twenty years ago are brought back to life in the form of instructional materials. They water down the actual material to a point where it almost becomes propoganda. In an effort to make the text "non-biased," it has in effect become MORE biased... just in the "right" direction. If you are a teacher and reading this, please do me (and pretty much every other student out there) a favor and DO NOT use this textbook in your classroom. I don't know if there are other books that do the same thing better or what your options are, but I would certainly not recommend this one. In that case, I guess all the reviews helped! 5 stars (THE Book on Courtyards.) - Courtyards is a terrific book, the result of 20+ years of loving research. Oregon Professor John Reynolds is crazy for courtyards and it certainly shows. A courtyard is a space surrounded by a building, often surrounded by a house. There are all manner of courtyards, large, small, huge, quiet, loud. Some are open and others are terribly private. But all good courtyards have things in common. In the landscapes most of us in the US are used to, we have a house and the gardens are on the outside and we see them before we see the house. In a sense these landscapes serve mostly as dressing to enhance the outward look of the house. But a fine courtyard garden is different. It is smack in the middle of the house and the house surrounds it. It is not wide open to the world, but instead is a place to get away from it all, a place to be outside, but not to be out in the open. The best courtyards are open to the sky, have water, vines, a multitude of interesting flowers, trees, potted plants. A large number of the very finest courtyard plants are discussed in detail in this excellent book. I was struck by how interesting the numerous photos and designs were. Profusely illustrated, each one serves a definitive purpose. I was struck too, by how many different things go into the making of a well thought out courtyard. What is involved so that it will be warm in the winter and cool in the hot summer. What is involved so that it becomes a place where people want to be. I took many notes as I read this large book and some day I plan to build a house of my own design, and in the middle of it, I'm going to have a courtyard. My favorite read, by far, of all books and periodicals is The Surfers Journal. It truly captures the many angles of the sport. This book is somewhat in the same vein. It's exhaustive, comprehensive and true to the roots. If you love the history of the sport buy it. If you read Surfing, have never ridden more than one type of board or never traveled to pursue a new wave... don't (do those things instead... THEN buy it). There are some useful tidbits of information strewn among the lengthy volume but a large majority of the book seems filled with fairly uninteresting, small, black and white photos, and biographies of just about anyone in the world who ever attempted to stand up on a board. 4 stars (Very good for a Star Wars game) - I've got to state up front that I suffer from major Star Wars burnout -- the first movie (1977) was great, everything else has been merchandising -- so my praise for this game is not given lightly. Gameplay is smooth and dynamic, some Star Wars games we've had in the past have been really dreadfully behind the times, this feels like it's state-of-the-art. The space combat is a welcome addition. My son clued me in on new characters previously not available to be played. It looks great on the screen. Overall? For a Star Wars game, very good. For any other game, ok. It's an improvement on previous Star Wars games, but for my money I just do not want to hear Obi Wan Kenobi's voice encouraging me to trust the force or take a droidica apart or anything like that. 2 stars (Splendid graphics, but...) - Ok, I'll start with the graphics. I have high end PC (AMD 64-bit 3500+, Radeon X800XT 256mb, S-ATA Western Digital, 2 GB RAM) and there were no troubles with running the game at highest settings. The game is really beautiful - there are flying birds, crocodiles, the terrain is funny when you zoom on it. But for me this is the only good thing in the game. For example, why the **** you need that animated traveling steam engine? It does not change anything in the game. Only increases the lag in the game... You have many nations to choose from, but the final result is the same upgrades, almost the same units. I and one mate of me played the game over the LAN. He was with the Russians, me with the English guys. Practically, the only difference was that the Russians speak in Russian... I don't think that having the home town is big advantage. About the maps - I did not find random generated maps, which for me is big issue. I want to play every time on different maps. This gives me much more fun than to play on a map that I already know. And finally, when I wanted to uninstall the game it took me a lot of time just waiting to initialize uninstalling process. The whole process took about 3 minutes! In general the game lost the feeling of its predecessors. I don't feel it like AoE II. BTW, the same is with the EA II. For me much better are AoE II and the first EA. So, I'm going to sell my copy of AoE III and keep playing Empires Dawn of the Modern World. 4 stars (Not bad at all!) - I was a little antsy about picking up this title. A lot of the reviews are extremely mixed and offered up a wide variety of pros and cons for this game. I became a hard boiled fan of AOE1 way back when it first came out and you'd often find me facing off with friends via LAN while my Phonecian war elephants ran amok through their ranks. AOE2 was even better, allowing better tactics for your infantry and cavalry as well as great seige equipment and castles. So ...
