Now I Can Die in Peace - How ESPN-s Sports Guy Found Salvation- with a Little Help from Nomar- Pedro

1 stars (blah blah) - I used to like the Sports Guy before he got all cocky. You may live in a sports mansion, but your writing style is piss poor. 4 stars (Tremendous upside potential) - I'm a Yankees fan, but after living in Boston for a couple of years I can appreciate the pain and agony that Red Sox fans have endured. Very funny and entertaining- not the least bit bland which is so typical of books that focus on sports. 5 stars (Give this one a Pullet Surprise* (see footnote)) - Oh man, what a great book! Bill Simmons is not just one of our best sportswriters, but he's one of our best writers, period. This book epitomizes "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." As a sometime New Orleans Saints fan, I can identify so much with everything Simmons writes about. Except the thrill of victory part. At any rate, Simmons writes straight from the gut in a way that any true sports fan can embrace. It helps if you are a Red Sox fan, but that is not a pre-requisite.* (see another footnote) If you have ever faithfully rooted for a team that always breaks your heart, and then, suddenly, they win it all, what do you do? How do you react? Probably a lot like Simmons. Packed with footnotes that are as funny and insightful as the original prose, this book will provide the reader with some grin-inducing entertainment and also food for thought. What you get here is a highly personalized, almost impressionistic, account of the ultimate triumph of the Red Sox and the city of Boston. It reminds me of a couple of other fine sports-related books I've read recently that tell a grand tale by focusing on small vignettes and details.* (See yet another footnote.) Bottom line...pick this one up ASAP, before the dreaded Yankees makes some kind of freakish comeback. FOOTNOTES: 1. "A Pullet Surprise" is how one young high school student once spelled the name for the highest award for journalism. 2. In the 2004 ALCS, everyone in the known universe, outside of the Bronx...

Mario Superstar Baseball

5 stars (Batman and Robin's opinion on mario super star baseball) - Hi,it's Robin again. Batman and I thought that this game wuz awsome. It is more than baseball, characters have special powers and you can play at stadiums with obstecls. Batman will tell you about them, Hola, it is Batman again. In Mario stadium there are no obstecles. In Peach garden there are boxes in mid-air and if the ball bounces on them it will bounce. In Yoshi park there are pirhana plants that will bite. In Wario palace there are tornados and chomp chains that move the ball. In D.K. jungle there are barlles and claptraps. 5 stars (Simplistic Bliss) - While many believe that the simplictity of this game is it's downfall, I for one think that it is what makes the game so darn fun. I ussualy wasn't one to play too many baseball sims as they got too complex or tedious but this game is just right for me and all of you others like me who think baseball is kind of a slow game. All your favorite carachters are here and thensome. We have Mario, Wario, Peach etc. but we also have some obscurities like King Toadstool and Trixie Kong. Each carachter has their own specialty (other than balanced players i.e. Mario, Power players are good at hitting hard and pitching hard and fast but tend to be slow runners. Speed players tend to be good fielders and baserunners but average hitters and pitchers. Then there are technique players which as far as I can tell excell in pitching and are ok at everything else. Each player also has their own star power that when tapped into allows the player to hit or pitch with cool powers like a flame ball for Mario. That isn't the only piece of Mario flavor that finds itself in the game. Every field has it's own obstacle that is ussualy a staple in the series such as piranha plants that eat and spit out your ball. This game has the full range of modes but nothing really worth talking about. Over all this is a great great game for those of you looking for a simple fun ...

Backyard Baseball 2005

5 stars (OWNAGE) - ATLANTA BRAVES (forgot to pick Boston) 1. Ernie Steele (To me, HE FREAKING OWNS. HES MY UBER PITCHER AND HITTER) 2. Ichiro (everyone wants ichiro for his running, lol) 3. Abbner Dubbleplay (HES.... GOOD O_____O) 4. Albert Pujols (1st in batting avrg just like in MLB) 5. Alex Rodreguez (eh, he came of with some big hits i guess.) 6. Nero (My custom player! still kinda working on him but hes ok I guess MAXED POWER) 7. Derek Jeter- Shawn Green - Jim Thome - UPDATE! BARRY DEJAY (I usually switch these alot. THOME WAS MY GRAND PLAYER :( I LOST HIM FOREVER. Barry Dejay is like, "YO HOMIE SUP DAWG" kind of person XD) 8. Mike Piazza (He hits grand slams WAY too well..) 9. Nomar G. (His stats are just....off the charts.... hes good at everything!) And for my extras... Mr Clanky Mark Prior Randy Johnson (HE STINKS!) Pedro Martinez Mark Prior Abner Dubbleplay Shawn Green (HE STINKS ALSO!) Barry Dejay For some reason, Ernie Steele is really bad at pitching, but hes been a MVP since he started! First at bat, HOME RUN! I was like, dang hes good! Better keep him! You guys really should test this guy. He. Pwns. SO. MUCH!!. What is Quantum field like? I'm wondering. Best players would be: Ace (Nero) Ernie Steele Abbner Dubbleplay I tested Pro for the first time yesterday and it was HARD! Got a lucky GW home-run in Pick-Up mode. Pretty hard! I rate this game, 100/5 Stars. 5 stars (great and fun) - i love this game. i dont have it but i played it at a friends house. i love choosing a team and then choosing the posisions also i am soooo good at batting. my mom ordered it for me so i cant wait. i could seen more features to this game if my friend was not a hog and let me play more(she loves baseball and i dont blame her)you should get it even if you never played the sport. 5 stars (Sweet Review) - I play this game a lot and it is very fun. The best part is when some of my players hit a home run, I scream at them because they di...

MVP Baseball 2005

2 stars (A lot of tinkering, not a lot of control) - After playing MVP Baseball '04 and now, '05 on PS2, I find that I actually prefer the older ("Classic") version. The new game is great with many of the things still present from '04 that make it fun to play, but there is a reason it was priced less than '04. There are several small reasons it doesn't rock (they brought back the same announcers, lots of batters look exactly the same-Moises Alou still bounces in the batter's box even though he doesn't do this in real life-some players don't have pictures, etc.). Then there are the big ones... First of all, the overall graphics are great and the players are a bit more realistic and left handers can actually hit some shots only the right handers could do in '04. Plus, of course, the music is great. I only wish you could pick a playlist or leave some songs off (similar to GT3), because some songs really get on my nerves! I tried the "Owner" mode and one of the first things I tried was to design my own park. I could be missing something, but it looks like I can make a high right field wall, but not a left field one? Not to mention it is not as high as it looks (nothing like the Green Monster) when the game starts. I would like more control and more choices if the game is going to let me "design" my own park. The stadium starts off with a minuscule seating capacity (lower and upper deck, 20K only). Yes, you can purchase more seats and this is part of the fun, but isn't this the Major Leagues? When a new park is built, it looks like a massive artistic construction with seats all around. Starting off with only a lower and upper deck would be perfect for designing your Minor League park. After not finding a proper tutorial/FAQ for running my day-to-day baseball operations (selling tickets and concessions at the price I want), I tried it the best I could and found this also to be a confusing double-edged sword. The game doesn't take into account the team's record and eve...

Ladies and Gentlemen- The Bronx Is Burning- 1977- Baseball- Politics- and the Battle for the Soul of

3 stars (not so good) - Mahler writes for a magazine and he doesn't make any accomodation for a longer project. Pretty thin presentation. 4 stars (Ladies and Gentlemen the Bronx is burning) - This is a very entertaining and well researched book about the events in the New York in 1977. 5 stars (A Great Read!) - You do not have to be a New Yorker to like Jonathan Mahler's "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx is Burning." I live in the rural South, and really loved the book. Anyone who loves baseball, history, politics, New York, the late 1970's, or just good writing will thoroughly enjoy this book. My wife and I both loved this book. I am old enough to remember what we in Georgia thought of the Big Apple in that critical year of both bad news and hope. To know how the various story lines actually played out only enhances the fun of knowing what a mess things were in 1977. ...

Ballparks- A Panoramic History

5 stars (Ballparks by Sandalow and Sutton) - This volume is a must for sports enthusiasts everywhere. The photos of the various ballparks are spectacular feats of color photography. The Camden Yards are presented. The picture depicts the Yankees/Orioles contest in August of 2003. A panoramic shot of the Oriole Park depicts nightfall in the ballpark. There are similar spectacular views of Fenway Park, Memorial Stadium and Shea Stadium in NYC. A full color picture of Pro-Player Stadium provides a considerable conversation piece for Miami Dolphin fans. The book is worth the price of admission for the diehard sports fans. This volume would make a perfect school project for the student in your family. 5 stars (So nice to see a book like this) - This is such a wonderful book. The photos, the colors, it took me back to my childhood. While it was given to me as a gift, I should have bought it before. If you are looking for a gift for that baseball nut you have in your family, get them this book. You will not go wrong and they will love you for it. 2 stars (Low quality editing) - While the size of the photos is a treat, this book offers little else. Most every photo can be seen in other books, and the editing is just horrible. There are many captions that are clearly in error, for example, calling a US Cellular game between Chi and Clv the all-star game, and labeling a Dodger Stadium pic as being from 1983 when it is clearly within the last 4 years. Who dunnit???? ...

Wrecking Crew - The Really Bad News Griffith Park Pirates

5 stars (Junkies, wino's, pimps and whores.... and baseball) - I've never done hard jail time, and I've also never slept with a stripper, but this book opened a window into a life many of us have chosen to either forget or never look through. It really forces one to think about the realization of dreams and ambitions in ones life versus the things that we do to get there and the lessons we are willing to forget in order to keep those dying dreams alive... there are simple joys in life, like baseball, good sex, and good friends, this book shows that despite our failures as human beings, we are still capable of redemption to some degree and some realization of happiness. 5 stars (THIS SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING!) - This book really does have it all. John Albert invites you into a world filled with drugs, sex, personal demons, and what we all want in our lives, some sort of purpose. This is Less Than Zero with a conscience. 5 stars (Now THIS is baseball!) - This book was totally cool. Baseball, sex, drugs and punk rock. Finally a book about what makes American great! This is a book about me and MY friends. Old punks, bad tattoos, weak livers, the usual. ...

Luckiest Man - The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig

5 stars (The Way Baseball Should Be!) - This book is tremendous ... on so many levels. Most importantly, it gives the reader a good and solid understanding of the man. I have always been a Lou Gehrig fan but I have never fully appreciated the complete humility of the man. Additionally, the description of baseball and its players, clearly illustrates the tremendous differences between the game as we know it today and the way it once was. 4 stars (Moving and Lively Book) - This was a very well-written and moving book. As a huge Yankee fan and someone who has read many baseball books, this book is great. One gets a real sense of the times, along with Gehrig the person, and the beauty of the sport of baseball. As a student of the important philosophy Aesthetic Realism (www.aestheticrealism.org) founded by Eli Siegel, poet and critic, I've learned what makes a thing beautiful from a work of art to a great leaping catch in baseball. Mr. Siegel stated, "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves." Certain sentences and descriptions in this book I found beautiful -- they have a relation of energy, zip and also exactitude. These are opposites that the game of baseball has too. I have recommended this book to others. 4 stars (What made Gehrig tick) - You don't have to be a baseball fan to appreciate LUCKIEST MAN. Certainly there's enough diamond action to satisfy the sport fan, but Eig's objective seems to be more of a psychological analysis of the great Yankee clean-up hitter (Ruth hit third). Eig goes into great depth about Gehrig's relationship with his mother. Apparently no woman was good enough for her son. Gehrig was thirty before he finally took a wife and that seemed to be an act of desperation as he sent Eleanor a diamond necklace before they actually went out on a date. For me the best part of the book was when Gehrig found out he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Talk about grace u...

Search for the Perfect Swing- The Proven Scientific Approach to Fundamentally Improving Your Game

3 stars (Old and dated) - This book has some good information but was in its prime in the 70's. Golf equipment and materials have changed so much in the last 10 years that the wooden drivers and crude cast irons in this book aren't too relevant to modern equipment. The theory discussed in the book is good but dated. 5 stars (My Favorite Book) - This is my favorite book of all time: a wonderful model of the golf swing that has not been surpassed since its original publication in the early 1970's. Think of all the enduring golf ideas that have followed from this book: the heel-sole weighted putter and club, the importance of the left side guiding the swing, the swing plane and curve of the golf ball, the importance of different shots, the kinetic chain for power, aim and stroke in putting, ... All current teaching and golf science started right here. It is silly to play golf without fully understanding this book. 3 stars (lots of info , but you need a Phd to pu it to good use.) - it was a dry read with many "big" words,. I think that with someone who understand it, it would be a great help. ...

Three Nights in August

5 stars (Amazing) - If you are a baseball fan, this is a must have book. As a fan, you get to see what is going through the mind of a baseball genius. This is a book a person will not be able to put down. 4 stars (Bissenger hits a ground rule double with Three Nights) - I was fairly excitd about this new book from Buzz Bissenger being a baseball fan and loving Friday Night Lights as well, I was sure that this book was going to be a grand slam. full of all soorts of insights into the game I love. Although the book was good it wasn't great and maybe I was looking for something that isn't always possible a follow up book that was as good than the breakout ( Friday Night Lights) Bissenger is a good author and has a great ability to frame the content, but I thought this book bounced around to much from past Cardinal experiances to the present task of writing about the series against the Cubs. It was a bit choppy in the transitions and left a bit to be desired. However the part about Daryl Kile was brilliant and I did especially like the insight into Larussa's almost manic style of decision making. So I guess the question is would I have liked this book better had I not read Friday Night lights and had those expectations?....Probably Not 5 stars (Even if you're not a Cardinals fan...) - Which of course I am, but still. Any baseball fan should enjoy this book. The stories Bissinger tells gives you insight into how LaRussa manages different situations. The access Bissinger received throughout the 2003 season allowed him to write in-depth about LaRussa's relationship with many Cardinals from the last few years. You'll learn more about LaRussa, Duncan, Pujols, McGwire, Kerry Robinson, Stephenson, Ankiel, Kile, Matheny, Cal Eldred and many more. Highly recommended. ...

License to Deal - A Season on the Run with a Maverick Baseball Agent

1 stars (hypocrisy) - The author is a whole host of contradictions. While he rails against the ethics of sports agents, he himself embarassingly participates in questionable activities to add to his sports roster. The book is a boring read, and after awhile his "holier than thou" attitude begins to grate on you. 5 stars (Informative look into the lives of baseball agents.) - Review: License to Deal by Jerry Crasnick License to Deal by Jerry Crasnick is sub-titled "A Season on the Run with a Maverick Baseball Agent". The agent is Matt Sosnick, whose most famous client is Dontrelle Willis of the Florida Marlins. Crasnick paints Sosnick and his partner Paul Cobbe as good people and friends to their clients. All this in a field of sharks and wolves. Sosnick and Cobbe routinely try to keep their own clients from abandoning and jumping to other agents while the players are still in the minors or just starting out their careers in the majors. Crasnick makes Sosnick look like the victim. But as Crasnick shows (although he never explicitly states it), Sosnick-Cobbe have their own moments where they are rude, arrogant, aggressive and steal other agents' clients as well. The bottom line is this is a cut throat business and either all agents are victims or none of them are, because they all get screwed and all try to screw others too. Crasnick also writes about other agents and baseball deals in the book. There is a whole chapter on Scott Boras, as well as many other anecdotes and quotes from other agents and baseball management interspersed throughout the book. Overall, Crasnick does a good job describing the life of agents. The middle-tier ones like Sosnick and Cobbe and the stars like Boras and Moorad (now in management with the Diamondbacks). I recommend this book for those that are interested in the business side of baseball. 5 stars (Sports Book of the Year) - Without question, this will go down as the best sports book of 2005. Jerry Crasnick stumbled ...

Juiced - Wild Times- Rampant -Roids- Smash Hits- and How Baseball Got Big

4 stars (Thoughtful and Important) - Conseco begins by stating that he believes inteligent use of steroids, combined with human growth hormone, will one day be accepted and standard practice. (Add genetic engineering to the list - my opinion.) Conseco was a fair-to-middling minor-league player until he vowed to his dying mother that he was "Going to be the best athlete in the world." Shortly after that he began using steriods after reading up on the topic and considerable discussion with a "regular." Initially it was scary - he wasn't certain what would happen, or even if anything would change. After about two weeks he began to see and feel changes. At the same time, Conseco also undertook a strenuous program of exercise - particularly exercises that emphasized speed, not muscle mass. A third enhancement came from intense studying of pitchers to better guess their next pitch, rather than just reacting. Eventually Conseco added about 70 lbs. of muscle, and increased his running and swinging speeds. An additional benefit was building endurance - he no longer lost energy as the season wore on - like most players. Mark McGwire soon became a pupil and followedd a similar regimen - adding 50 lbs to his frame. Both McGwire and Conseco had great swings at the start, and Conseco stresses that steroids will not make a great athlete out of someone lacking talent. Conseco is sensitive to possible damage from steroid use, and credits his avoidance to careful attention to amounts and types used. He also believes that baseball players have an advantage over football players when it comes to steroid use because they are not so inclined to overdo it in an effort to reach 300+ lbs. Conseco eventually became well-known for steroid use - probably because he taught so many other players and trainers about it. Conseco, however, also thought it was due to racial bias - he was from Cuba. Clearly Conseco, McGwire and others reached great success via steroids, and do not appear t...

Coach- Lessons on the Game of Life

1 stars (Good idea didn't translate into a book) - I like the idea that Michael Lewis wrote this book/article to defend a man whose coaching techniques are clearly out of style in todays world of my child this and my child that. Having said that I did not like this book: 1) the writing was chopping and hard to follow at times. i had to re-read many sentences to understand lewis' point. 2) the story lacked the depth of lewis' other wonderful books - where's the who/why/what that lewis used to moneyball (and others) educational - i wanted the story behind the story. 3) who were all the pictures of? i found them distracting... i'll continue to read lewis' books bu thope the next one is better 4 stars (Target Audience Young Adults) - I differ with previous reviews lamenting the brevity of the book. Obviously, adults reading the book were thinking in terms of adults. I read the book thinking about my 12-year old grandson and felt it was a perfect book to send him at this stage in his life. This is exactly the type of book you would want to send your grandchildren or have your own children read. It sends a powerful message and being written by someone having been coached by this person at the age of 13 makes it even more valid. It may be short, but that's the beauty of it. It keeps your interest, gets the point across and leaves you wishing for more or better yet, offers the opportunity for discussion with young adults. 5 stars (Will leave you wanting this coach for your children!) - MONEYBALL by Michael Lewis was one of the best baseball books that I have ever read . . . so when I saw the author had another book out, COACH, I made it a point to get and read that one too . . . and I wasn't disappointed, though it is radically different from his earlier effort. MONEYBALL dealt with the economics of professional baseball as it is played today . . . COACH is the story of the author's coach when he was in high school who now--because he hasn't changed his app...
