4 stars (Good book, bad DVDs) - This was the textbook for a university Arabic class I took. The book is good, but the included DVDs are awful and annoying. I recommend this book, but suggest purchasing the Instant Immersion Arabic 2-cd set to learn some vocabulary and phrases (for about $9.99). 4 stars (Great for self-study) - I met with a partner daily for an hour each day for 6-8 weeks, and we learned a great deal from this book. It is definitely good enough for self-study. The one problem is that for the vocabulary and cultural activities, it assumes you have a teacher to fill in the details, so we didn't get much out of those. We did learn to read, write, and pronounce all the sounds, and it's terrifically neat that I can now read basic Arabic signs which are in pictures in the newspaper. 3 stars (Workbook #1) - This is a somewhat cumbersome workbook designed for conventional advanced high-school or college-level classwork. I find it to be neither poor nor excellent, hence my rating of "3." It does not seem overly useful for self-study. One comical flaw on the front cover is the listing of the authors in English in an order that does not correspond to the listing in Arabic. ... At first I must say that it is quite hard to use until you've learned how to derive the root from a word, the alphabet of course, forms of words, and verb measures. Therefore I would definitely advise you to start with a cheap dictionary which is more easily understandable, at least until you learn the basics. Having said that, I have to tell you that anyone who says this is not a good dictionary was most likely just frustrated because they had not learned the basics yet. If you look the reviews, you'll notice that most complaints were from people trying to learn Arabic from the beginning with Hans Wehr. You'll also notice that anyone even remotely familiar with Arabic can't seem to praise it enough. Thats because once you're through learning the root system you are going to realize that the Hans Wehr is by far the most comprehensive and useful dictionary you'll find unless you're studying a very technical or esoteric subject. I guarantee that once you get your foundation in the language and have used this dictionary for a little while, other dictionaries will simply piss you off with how superficial and disconnected they seem. 1 stars (Big Disappointment) - The first CD - Talk Now! - was nice for learning some basic vocabulary items and expressions. It's good to know before you buy it that you get nothing but vocabulary, no grammar at all. The second CD surprised me because I imagined it would be more of the same, but you can't use the second CD UNLESS YOU ALREADY KNOW ARABIC! That struck me as bizarre, since I expected the second to build on the first. But they were miles apart in level. 5 stars (Great intro to Arabic) - If you are comfortable using computers, and you want a fun way to learn very basic arabic words and phrases, this is an excellent program for the money. Areas covered include numbers, colors, food, countries, shopping, etc. Fun quizzes and matching games as well. 4 stars (Good Program - With Limitations) - The Good: Rosetta Stone is a very user-friendly, low-stress program that will teach you a lot of Arabic vocabularly over time. The format is very simple (a good and bad point)- You get four pictures on the screen and either a written or spoken phrase beneath. Match the phrase to the picture and you're on the way. Very good for association and vocabularly drilling, and pretty easy to use, so you can play with it throughout the day without having to devote a lot of time to "studying." Also, you would be surprised at how creative they can get with the "match the picture" format; all kinds of situations you wouldn't think possible. The Bad: First, the price. This would be a great $70 program, but the $170 tag is really pushing the envelope. Also, although this program is sold everywhere, the company seems to be pretty rigid on the price- always advertised as $195 but offered for some type of discount at $170. On the other hand, there are a lot of lessons in the program and they go pretty far into the language, so unless you are sure you are going to stick with it, this is a big investment to make and then give up after a few weeks. Next, this program cannot stand alone, especially in Arabic. For one thing, it does not teach Arabic script, you need that before you start (see Awde's book on the Arabic Alphabet as the best choice for that). Second, it does not teach grammar, just word association, and you should be aware that Rosetta Stone uses the exact same lessons for every language, they are not tailored to the pecularities of Arabic. You absolutely need an Arabic textbook to accompany this, or by lesson 4 you will be lost (Smart's Teach Yourself Arabic is the simplest and cheapest). Last, the voices used (unless they've changed them recently) are very strange. Some of the other languages are good, but the Arabic speakers sound like greeters at Disney World. 3 stars (Good vocabulary builder and refresher, not for serious study) - I am actually reviewing the online version from Rosetta Stone Online, which makes the full Level I and II versions available by subscription. Each section consists of a series of Listening, Reading/Listening, Speaking, and Reading exercises. The full version of this software consists of 19 units of 10-12 sections each. In each exercise, you are given a series of activities consisting of a choice of four pictures and/or pieces of text and/or spoken dialogues (depending on which type of activity it is), and you must choose the correct picture/text/dialogue from the cues. The exercises are very simple, suitable for children or for quick reviews. If you are new to Arabic, or refreshing your skills after a long period of disuse, the repetition will be useful in building your vocabulary (back) up. You are fed bits of grammar incrementally with each new unit. You start with simply identifying various people and objects, and then add a few adjectives, and then add a few verbs so you are recognizing simple sentences such as "The boy drinks some milk" or "The bird flies" or "This car is not red, it is white," etc. Each unit adds more pieces of grammar and more vocabulary, building up to more complex sentences, different verb tenses, and so on. However, that is as far as it can take you. Diligently practicing all the exercises should expand your vocabulary and give you basic grammatical skills in Arabic. It will not bring you to the point of being able to carry on a meaningful conversation (unless your conversations are confined to describing objects and pointing at various people and animals and stating what they are doing), nor will it enable you to, say, read a newspaper. For self-study, this software makes a good supplement to more robust texts and tapes. Don't expect it to bring you up to full proficiency. If you want to do more than recognize simple sentences and learn a lot of "everyday vocabulary,... 5 stars (Immersion Arabic!) - I just received this item in the mail recently and already I'm impressed. However, I would like to offer a couple of warnings to beginner Arabic learners: 1. First, do NOT buy this AND the "LINGUAPHONE Arabic InAction V2" CD-ROM because they are the same product. The only difference between the two is that "Learn Arabic Now" has two additional catagories/lessons a few more games, and 5,000 additional Arabic words that can be learned. "Linguaphone V2" seems to be the condensed/ abridged version of "Learn Arabic Now" because the graphics and program set-up are identical. 2. Purchase Nicholas Awde's "THE ARABIC ALPHABET - How to Read & Write It" and study it before engaging in this program. Though good, "Learn Arabic Now" does not give lessons on Arabic script and stroke order. The alphabet is briefly explained in a pop-up, but this is a general overview that only someone who has studied the Arabic alphabet would be able to relate to. 3. Also, don't be intimidated by the program. It is constructed to give an "instant immersion" effect. This is good, but I find it most effective to spend one week on 1 or 2 sentences of new Arabic vocabulary before moving on to new lessons. 4. Finally, if I was not already listening to Pimsleur's "Instant Conversion" CDs (the one on the Barnes & Noble site has 10 CDs, unlike Amazon's version which just has 8), I would be totally overwhelmed by "Learn Arabic Now". However, since "Instant Conversation" has already prepped me, almost everything in "Learn Arabic Now" is a reinforcement of previously learned vocubalary. 5 stars (Learn Arabic!!!) - Arabic Now is a very good software when it comes to language learning.
