5 stars (GET THIS PROGRAM!) - well my norton expired.... so i was trying a free antivirus and free anti spyware... well the day after i quit using norton my computer started acting horrible... i could be surfing the net and a window would open out of nowhere..... i KNEW i had something... but my antivirus i was using didn't show anything up... so i bought this.... ya it cost a bit.. but after the rebates it wasnt bad at all.. and i installed this and had not even scanned yet, and norton had found a trojan on my puter 22 times.. that was without even scanning yet!!! needless to say.. got rid of that trojan, and my computer has worked better than it had in ages every since.. i would recommend this to ANYONE!! buy it NOW!! With the 2003 version, I switched to Norton Internet Security and loved it. It's always worked perfectly, and I've bought a new year of definitions each year. I planned to update my NIS 2003 version again this year when it expired, but about a month before the expiration, I got an offer from Symantec to buy the NIS 2005 Antispam version for a low price. I decided to go ahead and upgrade from 2003 to 2005 at the low price. Last weekend my subscription to NIS 2003 expired, so instead of re-subscribing, I instead downloaded and installed the NIS 2005 version. That's when the problems started. After downloading and installing, I updated the virus definitions. This went fine, and I thought I was through with it. A while later I went into the NIS program and when I opened it up, only part of the screen appeared--the border, without the middle with all the buttons to click. It did this everytime I opened the program, so I decided to reinstall the program. After restalling and updating the definitions, again I thought I was through. 1 stars (Useless Product.) - This has made spyware even MORE of a problem on my computer. total bummer, man! 1 stars (Do not go anywhere near this product.) - As another reviewer has mentioned this product seems to just add to your problems, during the setup it does say that it will get rid of unwanted pop ups and adds. Once I installed the program I found out that it could not remove some cookies that were found in the ad-ware and I had some error messages something about copy write prottection which I thought was complete crap, so not only does this thing not remove properly but it doesn't even detect the latest vireses or adds. Not only that because I later found out that my computer crashed again when it was working fine before I installed this pathetic program, I suggest you get the latest version of Norton anti-spyware 2005 or PC-cillin instead. 5 stars (McAfee AntiSpyware: Read before you buy) - Till recently, McAfee was only focussing on Anti Virus software. With the recent surge in attacks on home machines through malicious emails, popup ads and self downloading adware and spyware, the web surfers are in a fix. Unfortunately webrrot feels no need to stand by its current marketing claims of: Free Software Updates Spy Sweeper is continuously updated to provide you with the most advanced and effective spyware protection. As a Spy Sweeper customer, you receive these updates to our software absolutely FREE. This is simply not the case they have now instituted an anual subscription update fee like the big boys. When I addressed this with them on the phone they suggested I take it up with the vendor "Fry's Electronics" they should have warned you. Our issues are concern over the future marketing claims made by this manufacturer. They will also say you should have read the small print... We guess their interpritation of free and the rest of the world's is a little different. Who knows what they will decide in the future. We are seriously disappointed in webroot. 1 stars (This product can lock up your computer) - Upon installing a store bought copy of this program, my computer locked up. I contacted the tech service and they said it was not uncommon and I should uninstall and then go to a website to download. I did this and the same thing happened. Lock up occured during boot up and I had a difficult time just to get to access the uninstall function. The company admitted that this occassionally happens, but would not refund my money. I bought this product as added insurance to computer penetration and have refused to disable the other software I had emplaced in attempts to see if their software would subsequently work. 3 stars (Works good, but with lots of trouble - revised) - Maybe its just me. This software gets incredible reviews, and no one has any negatives, so I bought it. It does seem to do a good job finding the nasties. But the first thing I noticed was sloppy programming in the interface, like overlapping text, and border lines that aren't on the border. Hardly the stuff of award-winning software. Then I had trouble with it locking up my computer during updates, and sometimes during scans. I finally turned the automatic feature off. And it wouldn't automatically deal with the threats it finds, it waits all night for me to 'take action'. When I tried to use Active Desktop, forget it. Instead of synchronizing it would crash. I just did a clean install, of a brand new download, on a brand new HD, and I'm still having problems with it, just different ones. Like I said, maybe it's just me... Aug 23: I found the tech support at counterspy to be very attentive in trying to address my concerns, with some success. Now that I've upgraded to a new PC and XP, it's working flawlessly. I'm real happy with it's active protection. I would highly recommend it and give it 5 stars, if your running XP. 5 stars (Leading The Way) - Every now and then, a product comes on to the market which actually does just what you want it to do. I am hardly a system tech, but regularly clean my PC with various programs, and considered my system spyware free. That is until I read PC Advisor`s (UK) review of anti-spyware programs recently, and on their recommendation installed Sunbelt`s Counterspy. It was a breeze to install, and the fast scan showed 6 spyware progs installed. After I got up off the floor, Counterspy cleaned the drive and left me feeling more than a tad relieved. Sure, nothings` 100% foolproof, but this is easy to use, gives auto updates, and gives minimal system lag, not to mention being cheaper than the competition. 5 stars (Kick Ass Software!) - Beats the spyware detection and removal software from McAfee, Microsoft, Norton, and even Trend Micro by far! I previously had spyware detection and removal software by latter two of the above mentioned companies, and thought that I was clear of spyware. I did not know that there was a key-logging spyware and about nine tracking cookies on my computer, all along, until I installed Webroot's Spy Sweeper v4. Webroot's Spy Sweeper did not take long to detect the malware and presented me an option to remove it. Spy Sweeper's user interface is friendly and easy to configure, for a systematic person with a good basic awareness about Windows and internet terms such as web-browser, cookies, and favorites. The software help documentation contained with the program is also very helpful in explaining the options. During installation, at the user's selection, Spy Sweeper also adds a "Run a sweep" option to the explorer menu, which lets the user to simply right-click on a folder and click the selection to scan its contents for spyware. Its scans in realtime, and its scheduled scans are quite customizable. It automatically updates regularly itself by default. One of my favorite features is a text area in its program screen that shows a detailed log of the performed operations, which allows the user to track its operations, past and current. All these wonderful features, and yet, it does not slow my 1.3GHz (100MHz bus) computer running Windows 2000 with 244MBytes of SDRAM, unlike the other spyware detection software that I have used.
